Great info. You covered almost everything there is to know about Dutch Ovens. Want to share this tip when buying a dutch oven — they can come in various sizes and shapes. While you may think that it is best to get the largest possible size, purchasable by your budget, the fact is that you also need to think about the weight factor of the oven. Large dutch ovens are very heavy and may not even fit the normal sinks in the kitchen. Moving such an oven might require two people and carrying on for outdoor cooking can be a hassle. Here are the best brands from reliable manufactures in market today: http://dutchoven.pro/best-dutch-oven-reviews/

In reply to Mindy.

Mindy, absolutely you can roast veggies in your dutch oven! You don't need foil, but you do need oil. If you haven't used your dutch oven, you might need more oil than normal. Eventually you will build up a nice "patina". I'd suggest trying to keep this on the outside of the coals at first, or maybe on a grate above. It can cook quickly. Make sure you have a lid lifter too. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

Francisco, somehow we missed you! Your cast iron is never ruined. That's one of the great things about cast iron! Check out the section in this post about "seasoning" your dutch oven. That is how you treat it if it rusts. Thanks!

Hi there,

Thanks for your info!!

We are going camping for 1 week. Leaving this Monday. Wondering if I can use our Cast Iron Dutch Oven (which admittedly, we don't know how to use) over a normal campfire (as you show up above) to roast our veggies (like I'd do in oven at home)? If so, would you recommend that I put them in foil first and THEN into dutch oven or just straight in there? AT home I drizzle cabbage, for eg., with olive oil and spices and let it roast in oven. that's it and it's yummy! Hopin'to sorta recreate out campin' if possible. Thoughts please??

Thanks to you!
