Last week we took a trip to our closest apple picking spot, an area called Oak Glen just east of LA. We went in the middle of the week to avoid the crowds and were super excited to escape the weekday monotony. Sadly, every single U-pick orchard was closed! I can’t say I wasn’t disappointed but we did have a nice picnic and came home with plenty of local apples.
One of my favorite versions of a grilled cheese sandwich is sharp cheddar and tart apples on cinnamon raisin bread. It’s a perfect sandwich to make in a pie iron, and would be a great recipe to try on your upcoming fall camping trip. It would be wonderful for lunch, and a great excuse to settle in with a blanket and start the campfire early.

- 2 slices cinnamon raisin bread
- 1 tablespoon butter
- several thin slices of apple
- 1-2 slices sharp cheddar cheese
Tools
- Knife
- Pie iron
- Plate
Method
Note: This recipe is written for one serving, because that’s how much you can make at a time, so feel free to scale based on the number of people that you have.
- Preheat the pie iron for about 2 minutes.
- Butter one side of a slice of bread. Top the slice (the side that’s not buttered) with some of the cheddar, apple slices, and more cheddar. Place the other slice of bread on top, and spread with butter.
- Carefully place the sandwich in the pie iron and close it. Place the pie iron back in the fire for a minute or two, flip to the other side and cook for another minute or two. Your sandwich is done when the cheese is melted and the bread is golden brown.
